Little Black Dress goes Professional

Whenever we hear the term “little black dress” it’s usually associated with a tiny, sleek cocktail dress, but I beg to differ on the term with this gorgeous dress. I am always in search of items to add to my professional wardrobe, but it tends to be difficult for me to find a dress that works for me. Many professional dresses look too big, aren’t shaped well on my body, or are beyond my budget, so it’s like finding a needle in a haystack for me! (Same goes for pants because I am tall and have the longest legs). When I found this dress that fit me like a glove, I HAD to buy it!

As many of you know, I LOVE to thrift shop and find the best deals, especially at the Goodwill close to my hometown because I find the best stuff. Not sure if most people know this or not, but Target donates all of their unsold Clearance items to Goodwill! This was one of my favorite discoveries within the last year since they started doing this, I have bought plenty of outfits from Goodwill with the Target tags still attached (including this dress)! Talk about a BARGAIN!

Outfit Details:

  • Mossimo black dress originally sold at Target, bought at Goodwill$12
  • Promod golden chain necklace purchased in Italy two years ago
  • Mossimo black heels from Target$30

One thing I learned in college is to “Dress for Success” whether it’s for a test, an interview, or meeting someone for the first time. If you dress for success, you are more likely to feel confident going into whatever it is you are doing that day. For me, I dressed like this for an interview and felt like I completely nailed it! (Still waiting to hear back about the job though, fingers crossed!)

Embroidered Open-Back Tank

This open-back tank is one of my favorite summer pieces which I purchased a couple of months ago, unfortunately I have only gotten to wear it once thus far. Open back tanks and shirts are HOT right now (even though the weather in WI is not…). This summer has been much colder than most and of course the nights I have the ability to go out with friends, are typically the nights that it’s been to chilly to wear!

DIY Construction Themed Event

Sorry that it has been a while since I have written a Pinterest blog post, I have been super busy lately with job applications, moving, internship, and so much more! I am super excited to talk about my latest Pinterest attempt because it involved multiple aspects of Pinsperation!

I am currently working as the Marketing Intern for a construction company called Consolidated Construction, and I absolutely LOVE it! Recently, my boss asked me to organize a sponsorship event at a golf outing and I was super ecstatic because I love anything involving event planning and creativity. My company was sponsoring the cocktail cocktail hour for the MMAC COSBE golf outing held in Milwaukee and we also were asked to have a tent set up at one of the holes. It was my responsibility to create a game and cocktail for the golfers to enjoy at our hole and create a display that marketed our company, and these were my results!

I spent a lot of time on Pinterest and the internet searching for construction themed parties and events to put this together. I didn’t want it to look too cheesy or childish, so I only picked a few elements here and there. Here are a few things I found on Pinterest as ideas, and I also did a general search for construction party which I got as ideas too.

Comments & Suggestions:

  • The mojitos were just pre-made Bacardi Mojito mix and I added fresh mint and lime to garnish and taste. The straws were too long, so I cut them down to fit the glasses and they were purchased at Hobby Lobby for $2.99 per pack of 24
  • The Tonka truck was purchased from Walmart for $25 and I took off the Tonka stickers and added various logos from our company with paper and glue to make it more personalized.
  • To make the Gatorade bottle labels, I followed some of the instructions from this Pinterest post, and modified it a bit
    • I removed the labels and measured them so I knew what sizes to make the labels on Microsoft Word (I added a bit to the length so it could overlap and stay easier.
    • Instead of one strip of tape, I used two since the bottles are much thicker than water bottles!
  • In addition to the above items, I made a custom sign that had a photo of a mojito and named the drink after our slogan, calling it the Make 1 Call Mojito.

In addition to the display, we created a game called Consolidate it. Make 1 Putt. Golfers had to stand behind two cones and putt a ball down the hill into a hard hat. The golfer which had it closest inside the hard hat then won a golf towel! We also had a gift card for golfers to win by entering their business card. I was very pleased with how the event turned out, and really was happy with the amount of compliments we received. Many golfers hadn’t heard of our company before, but were well aware of what we did with our branding efforts! If you are interested in viewing more photos from the event and our game in action, go to our Flickr album!

When Fedoras Make or Break an Outfit

There are many styles of hats that are trending right now, whether it’s the big floppy sun hat or the fedora, everyone is buying them (or wishing they did)! I personally have always thought that I look awful in hats, period. After my semester abroad two years ago, my thoughts completely changed! I found a wonderful (and cheap!) white fedora being sold on the island of Capri for 10Euro (closer to $15 USD). While I love this fedora, it is a cheaper hat, so I couldn’t pack it for the life of me and had to wear it because it dents easily (making it impossible to remove).

Two years later, I caved in a bought ANOTHER one. This time, I got a plain tan colored one thanks to my best friends who got me a Target giftcard for my birthday. It couldn’t have been better timing either (right before spring break)!

Now don’t get me wrong, fedoras (like every other hat) don’t look the best on everyone, but that’s only up to you to decide. I typically pair my fedora with a more casual chique outfit such as a flowy tank paired with shorts or jeans. You don’t want your shirt to be too much that it makes the hat look like a dumb accessory. Here are a few examples of how I wore my fedora, and the outfit details below!

Skater Skirt & Coral Blouse

Many people are wearing the ‘skater skirt’ this summer in various colors and patterns, and I chose the simple route with an all black skirt since it goes with everything! The nice thing about the skater skirt is that it can be worn more casually or dressy (like this photo). Summer has been a bit chilly in Wisconsin, and there haven’t been too many (or any..) nights that are super warm, so this outfit was perfectly comfortable for a night at Summerfest.

Outfit Details:

  • Kohl’s, SO brand skater skirt- $8
  • Forever 21 coral blouse- $18 (bought last spring)
  • Chunky vintage beaded necklace bought at a vintage market in Italy

Fashionable on the 4th of July!

Only a month behind on this post, but hey, thought I would still post it! I spent my 4th of July at Bradford Beach during the day in Milwaukee, and the evening at Summerfest watching the Timeflies concert! I am usually at Culver Summer Camps during the 4th of July, so I don’t typically have the freedom to make my own plans to celebrate. This summer was different, and I loved it!

To the beach, I wore a simple crop top over my swimsuit with some high waisted shorts. Perfect outfit for the beach! Later that evening, I met up with some different friends and got a bit more dressed up for the concert!

Outfit Details:

  • Victoria’s Secret white bikini tube top, given to me by a friend
  • Forever 21 high waisted distressed jean shorts-$12
  • Black GAP fringe sandals purchased a few years ago-$15
  • Charlotte Russe sheer red blouse, borrowed from a friend
  • Charlotte Russe white lace shorts- (bought last summer) $18
  • Gold chain necklace from Kohl’s$2
    • The necklace was on clearance for $12 and I had $10 of Kohl’s cash, so it only cost me $2!
  • Black vintage cross body bag- $3

Summer Stripes

I seem to have an obsession with coral and stripes this summer! Has such a nautical feel to it and you can always dress up or dress down a striped top or dress. I don’t get to wear dresses too much, and when I do have the opportunity to, I take full advantage of it! When I went down to Indiana a few weeks ago to visit my old friends, campers and coworkers at Culver Summer Camps, I wore this striped dress out to dinner and out for the night.

Outfit Details:

  • SO brand striped dress from Kohl’s$20
  • Ann Taylor Loft blue and silver chunky necklace, given to me by a friend
  • Black zippered wedges from Target-(bought two years ago) $25

Blue Lace Shorts & Crop Top

I love a good comfy pair of cotton lace shorts, and I was devastated two weeks ago when I ripped my favorite pair of white lace shorts on a garage corner. Luckily, I was able to sew it somewhat to repair, and also found a new pair of blue lace shorts as well!

On Friday, I spent the day at the Wisconsin State Fair and thought this outfit was perfect to wear! The weather WAS gorgeous until early evening when a huge storm rolled through (you can see the scary sky in my photo). We left right in time before the storm hit and it brought so much 3/4 inch hail that it looked like it had snowed!

Outfit Details:

  • Blue lace shorts purchased from Plato’s Closet$8
  • Paper Crane white & coral crop top sold at TJ Maxx, but I purchased it from Goodwill-$4
  • Xhiliration brand black sandals bought from Target a few years ago on clearance

Cut-out/Backless Black Top & Distressed Skinny Jeans

Along came the trend of the oh-so-popular crop top, and now we see plenty more styles of the cut-out and backless tops that are also trending. I love a good trip to T.J. Maxx, especially when I can find a cute top or two like this one! I don’t get to go out all too often anymore, but when I do, I love to dress up! I haven’t had the chance to take a photo solo with this top on because it is so new, but here are a few shots with some friends! I love this top because I can throw a cardigan on top of it to make it more casual, or go without one for a night out on the town!

Outfit Details:

The thing I like the most about this outfit is the black bandeau from Threads for Thought; a cause-driven company that creates their products with sustainable materials and donates portions of their sales to a cause. I highly recommend taking a look at their items! Many designer department stores such as Nordstrom and many designer boutiques carry their products. You can also order online!

Tribal Patterned Maxi Dress

Another one from the archives! This is from last summer’s collection that I still wear today and absolutely love because it is so comfortable. This dress can be dressed up or down, worn during the day or out at night for a nicer dinner. I went to Chicago for a weekend with a friend and we spent one day walking around the city near the lake front and to Navy Pier, while wearing this dress.

Outfit Details:

  • Pins & Needles brand coral cardigan from Urban Outfitters– (bought several years ago) $15
  • Charlotte Russe tribal print, strapless maxi dress-$25
  • GAP white thong sandals from the GAP outlet-$15
